One Word: Physibles.

Need a new pair of sneakers? Mattress? A copy of A Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer? Just print them out:

Pirate Bay, the website that has gained a notorious reputation among those fearful of file sharing, are about to become my personal heroes by revealing the newest torrent trend-sharing objects for 3d printing.

Downloading 3d object files for printing may sound like a concept straight from an episode of Star Trek but it’s going to be a reality sooner than you think, and I am so excited to see what people will create for the sake of 3d object sharing.

Download, print, paint, repeat-oh the joys of technology!

iPad in Education Resources

Have you seen a kid around an iPad? They just pick it up and start using it. No manuals, no instructions; no keyboard or mouse needed. My friend’s young daughter picked up his digital camera and couldn’t figure out why nothing happened when she ‘pinched’ the LCD screen on the back – and I’m sure we’ve all heard similar stories.

Seeing as Apple’s touch-screen devices have only been with us for about 4 years, that’s pretty impressive. The steady evolution of Apple’s iOS devices has made touch interaction the standard for how we all are interacting with technology now – not so much an anecdotal fact when you consider how many other manufacturers are rushing to compete with Apple in the same consumer space.  Another educator friend got in touch asking about iPad resources in schools, and then wowed me with the knowledge that she’s fortunate to be smack dab in the middle of a school with tremendous focus on ICT – including netbooks, iMacs and iPads.

Because the iPad is so new, documentation about usage cases is thin on the ground, but steadily growing. Pilot programmes are kicking off all over the world, some in partnership with Apple, some going it independently (like our school will be shortly). Educators see students engaging with it, and know they’re on to something powerful that can and will transform the way that children are educated.

I’ve tried to round up the most detailed resources on iPads currently being used in the classroom. Please add any more resources in the comments.

How I Lost My Data and Learned To Trust the Cloud

This Sunday morning started out fairly well. I had spent the morning reclining in the garden with a cafetiere of fresh coffee, two editions of Wired to get through, and a very happy cat on my lap. With a new Macbook Pro arriving later in the week, I thought I would kick off a backup on my Macbook before going out and enjoying the rest of the day.

Somewhere amidst my tiredness, I decided to totally erase my backup drive and use it as a clean slate for a new backup. In the past I’ve used arRsync, but thought I would give Time Machine a go as all I wanted to do was mirror my 500GB drive to another 500GB drive.

Using Disk Utility, I erased the backup drive. I also thought it would be a good idea to empty the Trash bin as I didn’t want to take up any space on the backup drive with trash files. That was my mistake.

Whatever happened next can’t be anything other than user error (also know as Organic Component Failure). I was wondering why it took such a long time to empty the bin, and the next thing I knew, I was wondering why all the files had disappeared off my Desktop.

Oh. Shit.
